Integrative Arts Psychotherapist and Lucid Dreaming Facilitator

Hello, I'm Miranda, an Arts Psychotherapist, offering in-person and online support to adults and teenagers. I'm also an Artist, a Lucid Dreaming Facilitator, and an Arts and Well-being practitioner, with many years of experience working with diverse groups. I have a history of working in performing arts, travelling and touring. I love all aspects of the creative process, especially supporting people to find their creative spark. As well as therapy, I offer groups and workshops, I am a big believer in the power of community.

I have a long held fascination with liminal and extra-ordinary experiences, and how the arts can help us to learn from these. I am supported in all that I do by my community, meditation, nature connection, my art and dreaming and lucid dreaming practices.

On this website you can find out more about how I use creativity in therapy. If you prefer talking therapy, I am comfortable working this way. Everybody has a unique story to tell and I'm here to listen to you, supporting you to find your voice.

Typically, people turn to therapy when they are having a hard time, but it can also be a place for self-discovery. Creative therapy can help with big life transitions and with uncovering our joy, purpose and flow. Many people coming into therapy are struggling with big questions: How can I develop self-esteem and purpose in this uncertain world? Is it possible to move on from painful past experiences? How can I find lasting and satisfying relationships? Who am I really and who do I want to become?

Why Creative Psychotherapy?

    The Arts as a gateway

The Arts can allow us to make discoveries about ourselves, getting to know ourselves on a deeper level, freeing us from limiting ways of being. I believe that everyone has the ability to be creative, even if they don't see themselves as an "arty" person.

    When it's difficult to talk

The arts are a safe way to explore emotions which might be too difficult to express in words. They open up the possibility of processing painful experiences, such as trauma, in a careful and contained way. We can use the arts to build our inner resources and resilience.

    Creativity, Play and Mindfulness

Playfulness, imagination and creativity are natural signs of health. Creative therapy can help us to reconnect with this vital part of ourselves and develop our capacity to be present in the moment. Therapy can be hard work but it is also possible for it to be fun!

Creative Dreaming

We all dream, we just don’t always remember, and we spend a significant amount of our lives doing it. Our dream life is a unique creative space, connecting us to the deeper layers of who we are. Creative practices can help us to cultivate a friendly relationship with our dreams so that they can become a source of inspiration and guidance.

Neurosciences tells us that dreaming has an important function in the consolidation of memory and the processing of emotions. This is why dreams can be troubling at times, even as they are doing this work. Many people struggle with trauma effected sleep and re-occurring nightmares, which can be seen as something causing this system to getting temporarily stuck. Conscious dreamwork can transform this, supporting the natural processing that dreams are designed to do.

What is Lucid Dreaming?

A lucid dream is a dream in which we know we are dreaming whilst we are still within the dream. For example, we might be flying over the ocean like a bird in the dream world, whilst being well aware that in reality we are safely asleep in bed. Most people have had at least a few lucid dreams naturally, especially in childhood but it is also a skill that be can learned. Becoming lucid within a dream gives us tremendous freedom. We might choose to have adventures or we can use the space for growth and recovery. Anything that can be addressed with hypnotherapy can be addressed within a lucid dream and we are the ones in control of the process. We can meet with kindness younger versions of ourselves, perhaps offering ourselves the care we didn’t originally receive. We can meet and befriend the shadow parts of ourselves we find hard to face. This can lead to profound shifts and breakthroughs. Knowing that we are really safely sleeping, and that everything we are experiencing has been created by our own imagination empowers us.

      My Approach

In therapy, work collaboratively, in a way that supports you to feel safe to explore at your own pace. My approach is person-centred, mindful and trauma-sensitive. I can offer short or long-term support. We can meet online or in person, indoors or outside. I am alongside you as you develop your inner resources, supporting you through your process of enquiry and change.

I work with a wide range of creative methods- including visual art, nature-based arts, digital arts, sand tray, clay, movement, bodywork, stories, puppets and poetry. I am equally happy to suggest creative experiments as I am to be guided by your interests. Our work can include body-mind practices such as breathing, grounding and meditation.

My groups are as inclusive as possible. I lead participants through a range of inspiring and accessible creative exercises, which we then reflect on together.

Dreams are also an area we can explore, discovering your own personal mythology. I have trained as a Lucid Dreaming Facilitator, you can see more about this fascinating and powerful approach in my Lucid Dreaming section.

My style of therapy is called Integrative: these means that I draw on research and expertise from several theoretical perspectives including neuroscience, attachment theory, Gestalt, mentalisation based treatment, intersubjective psychodynamic and transpersonal psychology. This gives me a varied toolkit which we can use together to support you in a very individualised way.

      My Experience

I've worked with many neurodivergent people, adapting therapy together to suit their unique needs and strengths. I have supported people with grief, depression and anxiety, as well as working with survivors of abuse and trauma both in charity and NHS settings. I've worked with people who wanted to get past creative blocks that stopped them in their tracks and with people who were struggling to let go of life-limiting shame. I've supported people through major life transitions and been alongside them as they integrated and let go of past traumas.

I teach drawing as a meditation practice and using the arts for integrating extra-ordinary experiences. I have run groups as a community arts facilitator and therapist, for the Recovery College, Mind and the NHS.

      Groups and Workshops

I offer a range of groups, workshops and retreats, some therapeutic and others with a focus on arts and wellbeing. Currently I am teaching drawing as a mindfulness practice, creative dream-work and the use of art to integrate extra-ordinary experiences.

Together with Anya Amrith, we offer art therapy informed training and CPD to organisations and community groups. Find out more here:
